Departure Deck
Sydney Airport
The 300 metre long elevated roadway/departure
deck at the former Ansett terminal of Sydney's
Kinsford Smith airport is constructed entirely as a
precast concrete bridge linking the elevated
roadway with the departure hall. The soffit of this
deck, which forms the ceiling to the arrivals hall
exit roadway, has been created to provide a most
elegant vaulted feature which is highlighted with
special lighting effects.
 
This vaulted feature was created within the
complex tee-shaped girders which formed the
bridge.
Of critical importance in achieving this highly
visible architectural feature was the development
and construction of purpose built moulds capable
of producing 3-dimensional curved surfaces at
each end. |
